Adam Steen has been involved in multiple controversies regarding campaign finance and political conduct. In 2022, during a primary challenge against Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, the Wisconsin Ethics Commission found probable cause that Steen’s campaign committee, Friends of Adam Steen, violated campaign finance laws by coordinating with county-level Republican parties to funnel contributions exceeding state limits. The commission referred the matter for criminal prosecution; however, the Waukesha County District Attorney declined to file charges, stating that a campaign committee cannot be charged with a criminal offense and expressing concerns about the quality of the investigation and the admissibility of evidence. The Racine County District Attorney also recused herself, citing a conflict of interest. No criminal charges have been filed against Steen regarding these allegations. In his 2026 Iowa gubernatorial campaign, Steen faced accusations of orchestrating a challenge to remove a political opponent, Eddie Andrews, from the ballot. Reports indicated that members of Steen’s campaign staff coordinated with a donor to challenge Andrews’ petition papers, despite public denials from the Steen campaign. Additionally, Steen has been the subject of reporting concerning threats, including a 2026 death threat made against him and his campaign attendees.
