Alan Wilson

Alan Wilson, the Attorney General of South Carolina since 2011, has faced two primary categories of controversy during his career. In the 2010s, Wilson was scrutinized for his involvement in a Statehouse corruption probe centered on political consultant Richard Quinn. A 2018 State Grand Jury report concluded that Wilson’s inaction impeded the investigation, noting he had a close relationship with the Quinn family. Wilson denied any wrongdoing, stating he acted to ensure the investigation proceeded legally, and no criminal charges were brought against him. Separately, in 2025, the South Carolina State Ethics Commission opened investigations into nine alleged campaign finance and ethics violations. These include claims of misusing campaign funds for a birthday party, potential money laundering through campaign accounts, improper solicitation of donations from office staff, and the use of government resources for personal events. Wilson’s campaign has dismissed these allegations as frivolous, attributing them to banking errors or political motivation. These investigations remain ongoing. Additionally, in 2013, Wilson self-reported that his campaign failed to disclose at least 84 contributions and expenditures in required reports, which were later corrected.
