Alberto Carvalho

Alberto Carvalho, former superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), resigned on June 21, 2026, following a federal investigation. On February 25, 2026, the FBI searched Carvalho’s home and district headquarters as part of an investigation involving AllHere, an education technology company that secured a $3 million contract with LAUSD for an AI chatbot before collapsing into bankruptcy. While AllHere’s founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, was indicted for securities fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft, Carvalho has not been charged with any crimes. Prior to his resignation, the school board sent Carvalho a confidential letter warning of potential dismissal for cause, citing undisclosed financial benefits, including travel to the White House and other events subsidized by AllHere, and the alleged personal use of a district car and driver. Carvalho’s legal representatives have denied any wrongdoing, stating he acted within the law. During his previous tenure in Miami-Dade County, Carvalho faced scrutiny regarding a 2020 incident where he solicited a $1.57 million donation from a district vendor. The inspector general found no illegal activity but concluded the act created an appearance of impropriety. In 2008, Carvalho also acknowledged that his email exchanges with a reporter were inappropriate, though he denied having an affair.
