Benjamin Netanyahu, the long-serving Prime Minister of Israel, has been embroiled in multiple corruption scandals, investigations, and legal proceedings over the past decade. The most significant legal cases against him began with investigations initiated in December 2016, leading to multiple indictments. In November 2019, Netanyahu was officially charged with breach of trust, fraud, and accepting bribes in three major cases: Case 1000, Case 2000, and Case 4000. These cases involve allegations of receiving expensive gifts from wealthy businessmen, including cigars, champagne, and jewelry (worth approximately $195,000), in exchange for political favors, as well as negotiations with media outlets to influence coverage in his favor (Wikipedia; AA.com). The most serious allegations are in Case 4000, where prosecutors accuse Netanyahu of granting regulatory benefits to telecom magnate Shaul Elovitch, worth an estimated $600 million, in exchange for favorable media coverage on the Walla news website. The trial, which began in 2020, has involved over 300 witnesses and has been delayed multiple times due to COVID-19 and other factors. As of early 2026, Netanyahu has testified as a defendant, with ongoing cross-examinations, making him the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face criminal charges (Wikipedia; AA.com). In addition to domestic legal issues, Netanyahu has been wanted since 2024 by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Throughout his career, Netanyahu has repeatedly denied all charges, claiming they are politically motivated, and no convictions have been reported as of 2026.
