Robert Menendez served as a U.S. Senator from New Jersey from 2006 until his resignation in August 2024. In 2018, the Senate Select Committee on Ethics severely admonished him for failing to disclose gifts and using his office to advance the interests of donor Salomon Melgen. A 2015 federal corruption indictment against him resulted in a 2018 mistrial, after which charges were dropped. In July 2024, Menendez was convicted on all 16 felony counts, including bribery, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt and Qatar. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in January 2025.
