Senator Bob Packwood served from 1969 to 1995. In 1992, media reports detailed allegations of sexual misconduct involving multiple women. The Senate Ethics Committee launched an investigation, which eventually expanded to include allegations of witness intimidation, misuse of official staff to discredit accusers, and improper solicitation of financial support for his wife from individuals with legislative interests. Packwood obstructed the inquiry by editing personal diaries to remove incriminating passages. Faced with a unanimous Senate Ethics Committee recommendation for expulsion, Packwood resigned on October 1, 1995. There were no criminal indictments or convictions reported.
