Brad Heppner, founder and former CEO of Beneficient and former chairman of GWG Holdings, was convicted by a federal jury in Manhattan in June 2026 on all four counts brought against him: securities fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit those frauds, and making false statements to auditors. Prosecutors established that Heppner orchestrated a scheme to extract more than $150 million from GWG Holdings—which later collapsed into bankruptcy with over $1 billion in investor losses—by funneling money through a shell company he secretly controlled. He used these funds for personal expenses, including $59 million on home renovations for his Dallas mansion, a Texas ranch, private travel, and luxury jewelry. The scheme involved backdating documents, falsifying board minutes, and deceiving auditors and the SEC. Heppner faces sentencing in October 2026, with a maximum potential prison term exceeding 60 years. Prior to these charges, Heppner resigned from Beneficient in June 2024 amid internal investigations into accounting problems. There are no other reported scandals or allegations concerning Heppner beyond those linked to this specific fraud case.
