Carmelo Garcia, a former New Jersey Assemblyman and Newark official, was convicted in a federal bribery and corruption scheme. In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the city of Newark and the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation of his honest services, honest services wire fraud, and accepting bribes. Between 2017 and 2019, he accepted cash and jewelry from businessmen Frank Valvano Jr. and Irwin Sablosky in exchange for official influence regarding real estate redevelopment agreements. On June 3, 2026, he was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $30,000 fine.
