Carmelo Garcia

Carmelo G. Garcia is a former New Jersey politician and official who has been publicly reported to have been involved in multiple scandals and legal issues. He served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 33rd Legislative District for one term, and held various positions in Hoboken, including director of human services and assistant director of the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) (Wikipedia). Most notably, Garcia was charged and pleaded guilty to federal bribery, fraud, and conspiracy related to his work for the city of Newark and the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (NCEDC). Federal prosecutors allege that between 2017 and April 2019, Garcia sought and received significant monetary payments and benefits from Newark businessmen Frank Valvano Jr. and Irwin Sablosky in exchange for using his official influence to assist their real estate development interests, including securing redevelopment agreements and preliminary designation letters for properties in Newark.
