Carmelo G. Garcia is a former New Jersey politician and official who has been publicly reported to have been involved in multiple scandals and legal issues. He served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 33rd Legislative District for one term, and held various positions in Hoboken, including director of human services and assistant director of the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) (Wikipedia).
Most notably, Garcia was charged and pleaded guilty to federal bribery, fraud, and conspiracy related to his work for the city of Newark and the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (NCEDC). Federal prosecutors allege that between 2017 and April 2019, Garcia sought and received significant monetary payments and benefits from Newark businessmen Frank Valvano Jr. and Irwin Sablosky in exchange for using his official influence to assist their real estate development interests, including securing redevelopment agreements and preliminary designation letters for properties in Newark. These payments included cash, jewelry, and other benefits, with law enforcement documenting extensive communications and a cash payment of $25,000 in a restaurant restroom in June 2018 (oversight.gov), Wikipedia, Patch).
Garcia pleaded guilty in October 2024 to charges of conspiracy to defraud and honest services wire fraud, admitting to conspiring with Newark businessmen to obtain corrupt payments in exchange for official favors. He was sentenced on June 4, 2026, to one year and one day in federal custody, followed by three years of supervised release, with forfeiture of the $25,000 cash payment and jewelry obtained from the scheme (Wikipedia, Patch).
There are no publicly reported allegations or charges against Garcia for other forms of misconduct such as additional corruption, fraud, or ethics violations beyond those related to his federal plea and conviction.
