Cristina Fernández de Kirchner served as President of Argentina (2007–2015) and Vice President (2019–2023). Her career has been marked by multiple corruption investigations and legal proceedings. In the Vialidad case, Fernández de Kirchner was convicted in December 2022 of fraudulent administration regarding the awarding of public works contracts in Santa Cruz province to businessman Lázaro Báez. She was sentenced to six years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office. This conviction was upheld by a federal appeals court in 2024 and confirmed by the Supreme Court in June 2025, making the sentence definitive. A court also ordered her and co-defendants to pay approximately US$535 million in restitution. Other legal matters include: The Memorandum case, involving allegations of covering up Iran’s suspected involvement in the 1994 AMIA bombing. Fernández de Kirchner was dismissed from the case in 2021, but the decision was revoked by a higher court, and the Supreme Court confirmed in December 2024 that she will face trial. The K Money Trail case, in which she was acquitted of money laundering charges in 2023 after the prosecutor concluded there was no evidence of her involvement. The Dollar Futures case, in which she was acquitted of fraud charges. The Hotesur and Los Sauces cases, involving money laundering allegations, were dismissed in 2021. Fernández de Kirchner has consistently denied all wrongdoing, characterizing the allegations as political persecution or lawfare. In March 2026, the United States imposed an entry ban on her citing corruption.
