Dimitris Avramopoulos

Dimitris Avramopoulos, a former European Commissioner and current Greek Member of Parliament, is currently facing a European arrest warrant issued by Belgian authorities in June 2026. The warrant concerns allegations of participation in a criminal organization, bribery, and money laundering related to the Qatargate corruption scandal. The charges stem from his past role as an honorary board member of Fight Impunity, an NGO founded by Pier Antonio Panzeri. Belgian authorities allege Avramopoulos violated post-mandate ethics conditions by lobbying on visa-free travel for Qatar. Avramopoulos denies all wrongdoing, noting that his €73,000 compensation was approved by the European Commission, declared to tax authorities, and that he held no executive duties. He has requested that his parliamentary immunity be lifted to allow for a full investigation. Additionally, in 2018, Avramopoulos was among several politicians named in a Greek parliamentary investigation into alleged bribery involving the pharmaceutical company Novartis. He denied these allegations, and no conviction resulted from that investigation. He has not been convicted of any offense and maintains that the current Belgian allegations are unfounded.
