Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States (2017–2021) and the 47th President (2025–present), has been involved in numerous legal controversies, scandals, and investigations. In 2023, he was found liable in New York state civil cases for sexual abuse and defamation, and for business fraud. Specifically, he was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to concealing hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election, with the case stemming from evidence of booking these payments as business expenses to cover up an alleged affair (Wikipedia; Manhattan DA). He was sentenced to an unconditional discharge, meaning no penalties were imposed, citing presidential immunity (Wikipedia).
Additionally, Trump faced criminal investigations related to the mishandling of classified documents. In August 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, recovering over 100 classified documents, some marked top secret, which he was not authorized to possess after leaving office. He was indicted in June 2023 on 31 counts, including violations of the Espionage Act, but some cases, such as the election interference and classified documents cases, were dismissed without prejudice after his reelection, due to DOJ policies against prosecuting sitting presidents (Wikipedia; FBI search warrant; Grand jury indictment).
Trump has also faced multiple impeachment attempts; he was impeached twice by the House of Representatives, once in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in January 2021 for incitement of insurrection. Both times, he was acquitted by the Senate (Wikipedia). Furthermore, in 2024, he was sued in New York for inflating property values to secure favorable loans, resulting in a civil judgment ordering him to pay nearly $355 million, although the monetary penalty was later voided on appeal (Wikipedia; NYS court decision).
In recent investigations, he was also scrutinized for attempting to interfere with the 2020 presidential election, including efforts to overturn the election results through false claims, pressuring officials, and organizing fake electors in states he lost. The Department of Justice indicted him in 2023 on charges related to efforts to unlawfully retain power and obstruct justice (Special Counsel Report). Overall, Trump’s career has been marked by multiple legal challenges, convictions, and ongoing investigations, with some cases dismissed or still pending (Wikipedia).

INTRODUCTION 1. The defendant DONALD J. TRUMP repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election. 2. From August 2015 to December 2017, the Defendant orchestrated a scheme with others to influence the 2016 presidential election by identifying and purchasing negative information about him to suppress its publication and benefit the Defendant’s electoral prospects. In order to execute the unlawful scheme, the participants violated election laws and made and caused false entries in the business records of various entities in New York. The participants also took steps that mischaracterized, for tax purposes, the true nature of the payments made in furtherance of the scheme. 3. One component of this scheme was that, at the Defendant’s request, a lawyer who then worked for the Trump Organization as Special Counsel to Defendant (“Lawyer A”), covertly paid $130,000 to an adult film actress shortly before the election to prevent her from publicizing a sexual encounter with the Defendant. Lawyer A made the $130,000 payment through a shell corporation he set up and funded at a bank in Manhattan. This payment was illegal, and Lawyer A has since pleaded guilty to making an illegal campaign contribution and
