Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales

Both Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives on April 14, 2026, to avoid impending expulsion votes following investigations into sexual misconduct. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) faced allegations from at least four women, including a former staffer who accused him of rape and sexual assault. Other accusations included nonconsensual touching and the sending of unsolicited sexually explicit content. Swalwell denied the assault allegations while acknowledging past mistakes and suspended his gubernatorial campaign before resigning. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) was under a House Ethics Committee investigation regarding an admitted affair with a subordinate staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, who died by suicide in September 2025. Evidence, including verified text messages, confirmed Gonzales sent sexually explicit requests to Santos-Aviles and a separate former campaign staffer. Gonzales, who previously dropped his reelection bid in March 2026, resigned his seat following bipartisan calls for expulsion.
