Gennaro Sangiuliano

Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s former Minister of Culture, resigned in September 2024 following a public scandal involving an extramarital affair with Maria Rosaria Boccia, a self-proclaimed fashion entrepreneur. The controversy emerged after Boccia claimed on social media that she had been appointed as an adviser to the minister, a role the ministry initially denied. Allegations surfaced that Boccia had access to confidential documents regarding the G7 Culture summit and that public funds may have been used to cover her travel expenses while accompanying the minister. Following these reports, the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office investigated Sangiuliano for potential embezzlement and the disclosure of official secrets, while the Court of Auditors opened a probe into possible damage to the public treasury. In late 2024, the Tribunal of Ministers formally dismissed all criminal charges of embezzlement and disclosure of official secrets against Sangiuliano, finding no evidence of wrongdoing.
