Investigation Findings The House Ethics Committee found substantial evidence that Santos engaged in campaign finance violations, including using campaign funds for personal expenses like luxury goods and OnlyFans, filed falsified financial disclosures, and engaged in a fraudulent contribution solicitation scheme. Criminal Charges and Outcome In May 2023, Santos was indicted on 13 counts of fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds. A superseding indictment in October 2023 raised the total to 23 counts. In August 2024, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He began serving his sentence in July 2025 but was released three months later when Donald Trump commuted his sentence and canceled all remaining fines and restitution.
