Isabel dos Santos, daughter of Angola's former President José Eduardo dos Santos, has been embroiled in numerous scandals, corruption allegations, and legal investigations over her career. Since 2018, the Angolan government has actively pursued her for corruption, leading to the freezing of her assets in Angola, Portugal, and the Netherlands, and investigations into her financial dealings (Wikipedia). In December 2019, the Luanda Provincial Court ordered the seizure of her Angolan bank accounts and the confiscation of her stakes in companies like Unitel and Banco de Fomento Angola, alleging she benefited from deals that caused Angola a loss of approximately $1.14 billion (Wikipedia). Internationally, she faces multiple allegations of embezzlement, money laundering, and fraud. Notably, in 2020, an Angolan court labeled a diamond deal involving her husband's company as "fraudulent," and Angola's assets worth over $1 billion were frozen as part of broader efforts to recover stolen funds (ICIJ). Portugal and the Netherlands also launched investigations into her investments, including allegations of diverting funds through offshore companies and illegal asset transfers, with some cases resulting in court rulings against her, such as the Dutch Enterprise Chamber ruling that she illegally diverted €52 million from Sonangol (ICIJ). Legal proceedings have continued into 2023 and 2024, with courts in Angola and the UK freezing her assets, and her being accused of using offshore companies, forged documents, and fraudulent invoices to pocket millions. In November 2022, Interpol issued a warrant for her arrest, and in December 2023, her assets were frozen following a hearing at London's High Court. Despite these allegations, she denies all charges and claims that many of the investigations are politically motivated (Al Jazeera, Bailii).
