Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil from 2019 to 2022, has faced numerous legal challenges and investigations. In September 2025, the Supreme Court sentenced him to 27 years and 3 months in prison for leading a conspiracy to stage a coup d'état to remain in power after his 2022 election defeat. The charges included armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of democratic rule, and planning the assassination of President-elect Lula, Vice President-elect Alckmin, and Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Bolsonaro also faces investigations for the illegal sale of government-gifted jewelry, tampering with COVID-19 vaccination records, and spreading disinformation about the electoral system. In 2023, the Superior Electoral Court ruled him ineligible for office until 2030 due to abuse of power and misuse of public communication channels to discredit Brazil’s electronic voting system. Additionally, he was previously investigated for alleged interference in the Federal Police, though that inquiry ended. Bolsonaro consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
