Senator Jaques Wagner, the government leader in the Senate, is currently under investigation by the Federal Police in the ninth phase of Operation Compliance Zero, launched June 18, 2026. Investigators allege that Wagner acted in Congress to favor the interests of Banco Master and its former partner, Augusto Lima, in exchange for undue economic advantages. These alleged benefits include the use of private aircraft, high-value concert tickets, a luxury apartment in Salvador valued at R$ 2.45 million, and R$ 3.5 million in payments directed to a company linked to his family. During the execution of search and seizure warrants on June 18, 2026, the Federal Police discovered cash totaling approximately R$ 471,000, including US$ 49,000 in a Brasília hotel room and various amounts in euros and dollars at addresses in Bahia. Wagner has denied all allegations of illicit activity, asserting that the seized currency consists of declared daily allowances from international missions and that he is neither a defendant nor charged in any related process. His defense has appealed to the Supreme Court to annul the operation, citing errors and stating that his legislative actions were public and independent of the bank's interests. Historically, Wagner was cited in 2017 in the Odebrecht plea bargain testimonies related to Operation Lava Jato. Executives alleged he solicited campaign funds in exchange for tax benefits during his term as Governor of Bahia, and he was identified in company records under the codenames Passivo and Polo. These previous allegations did not lead to convictions, and a related case in federal court was closed in 2025.
