Kirill Basin, a candidate for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, has been involved in several documented legal and public controversies during May 2026. On May 2, 2026, Basin was arrested for disorderly conduct. On May 27, 2026, he was escorted by police from a South Maui town hall meeting following a verbal altercation with Councilmember Tom Cook and staff. Subsequently, Cook’s executive assistant, Jared Agtunong, filed for and was granted a temporary restraining order, citing threatening phone calls and text messages from Basin. On May 28, 2026, Basin filed a pro se lawsuit against the Maui police chief and the county, alleging he was subjected to abuse during his May 2 detention. On May 29, 2026, Basin was arrested and charged with first-degree terroristic threatening after allegedly brandishing a firearm at county employees in a Wailuku government building. Basin has publicly denied brandishing a firearm, asserting the item was an unloaded pellet gun that remained inside his backpack. He is currently awaiting further legal proceedings.
