Kris Mayes

Kris Mayes, the Arizona Attorney General, has been the subject of an impeachment recommendation by an Arizona House Ad Hoc Committee, as well as several controversies and legal challenges during her career. In May 2024, a Republican-led House committee recommended the Arizona House impeach Mayes, alleging she abused her power, neglected her duty, and committed malfeasance. The committee specifically cited her legal threats against the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, lawsuits against Cochise County, the issuance of a consumer alert regarding crisis pregnancy centers without cited evidence, and the use of public resources for town halls regarding groundwater, which the committee characterized as unauthorized electioneering. Mayes has dismissed these findings as a politically motivated sham. Mayes also faced a 2003 controversy while working as a journalist at The Arizona Republic, where she and other staff members were flagged for purchasing company stock prior to a sale announcement. Mayes denied wrongdoing or insider trading, and no legal charges were brought against her. Additionally, an Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that Mayes acted illegally by failing to provide a sufficient index of withheld documents in response to a public records request from Judicial Watch. Her office’s criminal indictment against 18 individuals involved in a 2020 "fake electors" scheme faced significant procedural hurdles; in 2026, Mayes dismissed the original indictment after courts found errors in the grand jury presentation, though she stated her intention to seek a new indictment.
