Kweon Seong-dong, a five-term South Korean lawmaker with the People Power Party, has faced several legal and professional controversies. In January 2026, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kweon to two years in prison for violating the Political Funds Act by accepting 100 million won in illicit funds from a senior Unification Church official in January 2022. This verdict was upheld by the Seoul High Court on appeal in April 2026. The courts found he accepted the money in exchange for relaying the church's policy interests to then-presidential candidate Yoon Suk Yeol. Regarding the Kangwon Land hiring corruption scandal, Kweon was indicted in 2018 on charges of business obstruction, third-party bribery, and abuse of power. He was acquitted of all charges by the Seoul Central District Court in 2019, a ruling confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2022. Other public controversies include his 2014 viewing of a bikini image on his smartphone during a government audit and his 2017 remarks regarding the voting age, which were criticized for belittling high school students.
