Lee Sang-min, the former South Korean Minister of the Interior and Safety, was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Seoul High Court for his role in the December 3, 2024, emergency martial law declaration.
Lee was found guilty of playing a key role in an insurrection by relaying instructions from former President Yoon Suk Yeol to cut electricity and water supplies to media outlets. He was also convicted of perjury for lying during the 2025 impeachment trial of former President Yoon, where he denied receiving or issuing such orders.
While prosecutors sought a 15-year sentence, the court acquitted him of abuse of authority charges, ruling that there was insufficient evidence that he successfully compelled fire officials to carry out the utility cuts. The conviction followed an initial seven-year sentence handed down in February 2026, which was increased on appeal.
