Lenín Moreno, who served as vice president (2007–2013) and president of Ecuador (2017–2021), is currently facing trial for alleged bribery, commonly referred to as the Sinohydro or INA Papers case. In December 2025, a judge ruled that Moreno must stand trial as a direct perpetrator of bribery. Prosecutors allege that between 2009 and 2018, a corruption network facilitated roughly $76 million in bribes from the Chinese company Sinohydro to secure contracts for the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant. Authorities claim Moreno and his family received over $1 million of these illicit funds via the offshore company INA Investment, which allegedly funneled money into personal assets, including a home in Spain and furniture. Moreno has consistently denied all wrongdoing, characterizing the proceedings as political persecution. He maintains that he had no responsibility for the project's contracting, which occurred under his predecessor, Rafael Correa. Additionally, Moreno has faced separate inquiries regarding alleged peculado (misappropriation of public funds) concerning missing heritage items from the presidential palace. He currently resides in Paraguay, where he serves as a disability commissioner for the Organization of American States.
