Lim Guan Eng, a former Chief Minister of Penang and Finance Minister, has faced multiple corruption and abuse of power allegations throughout his political career.
In June 2016, Lim was charged with two offenses related to the purchase of a bungalow: using his position to convert agricultural land for residential purposes and purchasing the property below market value. On September 3, 2018, the High Court granted him an acquittal after the prosecution withdrew the charges.
In August 2020, Lim was charged in connection with the RM6.3 billion Penang undersea tunnel project, including allegations of soliciting 10% of potential profits and receiving RM3.3 million in bribes. These proceedings are ongoing; in May 2026, the court allowed the prosecution to amend the RM3.3 million bribery charge.
Additionally, Lim, his wife Betty Chew, and businesswoman Phang Li Koon face charges regarding a RM11.6 million foreign workers' dormitory project, involving allegations of abuse of power and money laundering. In June 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed their bid to strike out these charges, mandating that the trial proceed.
Lim has also been involved in several defamation lawsuits, winning cases against Utusan Malaysia and New Straits Times Press, while losing a lawsuit brought by an opposition leader regarding a 2013 statement. Lim has consistently maintained his innocence, describing the criminal charges as politically motivated.
