Mayor

There is no single official referred to as the Mayor of the Czech Republic, as the country is led by a Prime Minister and a President. Municipal leaders in the Czech Republic hold the title of mayor (starosta) or lord mayor (primátor) for their respective cities. Several individuals serving in these roles have faced significant legal challenges: Pardubice lord mayor Martin Charvát was indicted for allegedly manipulating public contracts and violating fiduciary duties related to a 340 million CZK parking structure project. He resigned from his municipal roles after spending months in custody. Havířov lord mayor Ondřej Baránek was accused in September 2025 as part of an investigation into the corruption and manipulation of public housing contracts worth approximately 72 million CZK. Brno-střed deputy mayor Jiří Švachula was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison for his role in the Stoka corruption case, which involved the manipulation of public contracts totaling over 260 million CZK between 2015 and 2019. Řeporyje mayor Pavel Novotný received a three-month unconditional prison sentence in May 2025 following repeated offenses, including drug possession and insults, which led him to suspend his party membership. Petr Hlubuček was removed as mayor of Prague-Lysolaje following his arrest for alleged involvement in organized crime within the Prague Public Transit Company. Former Prague 1 mayor Oldřich Lomecký was definitively acquitted of all charges in cases regarding property sales. Former České Budějovice lord mayor Juraj Thoma was also definitively acquitted of abuse of power charges after years of litigation. Former Vsetín mayor Jiří Čunek was investigated for bribery allegations dating to 2002, but the case was dropped by the state prosecutor without charges.
