Mexican Governor

Rubén Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa, Mexico, since November 2021, has faced significant allegations regarding ties to organized crime. On April 29, 2026, the United States Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging him with drug trafficking and weapons offenses. Federal prosecutors allege Rocha Moya conspired with the Sinaloa Cartel faction known as the Chapitos to import fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine into the U.S. in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes and political support. The indictment claims the cartel helped secure his 2021 election victory by kidnapping and intimidating political rivals. He is further accused of shielding cartel operations and using state resources to assist their trafficking activities. In response to the indictment, Rocha Moya has categorically denied all allegations, labeling them a baseless political attack on himself and the governing Morena party. Following the charges, he announced he would take temporary leave from his position to defend himself against the claims. As of June 2026, no convictions have been reached, and the Mexican government has stated it requires further evidence to consider any extradition requests.
