Mexican Governor

As of August 2026, the following Mexican governors face significant public allegations and criminal investigations related to organized crime and corruption: Rubén Rocha Moya (Sinaloa) In April 2026, U.S. federal prosecutors in New York unsealed an indictment charging Governor Rocha Moya and nine current or former officials with drug trafficking, weapons charges, and receiving millions in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel faction known as Los Chapitos. The indictment alleges the cartel provided campaign support for his 2021 election victory through the kidnapping of rivals and ballot theft. Rocha Moya, who is currently on a requested leave of absence, has categorically denied all accusations, calling them baseless. Additionally, he has been implicated by cartel leader Ismael Zambada in a meeting that allegedly led to Zambada’s capture and the murder of rector Héctor Melesio Cuén. Esteban Villegas (Durango) The Mexican Attorney General’s Office (FGR) is investigating Governor Villegas for allegedly shielding the Los Cabrera criminal group, an offshoot of the Sinaloa Cartel. Sources indicate that U.S. authorities are also conducting a separate investigation into the governor’s ties to organized crime. Villegas has denied wrongdoing and stated that his U.S. visa remains valid after a consular review, though he has ceased traveling to the United States. Alfonso Durazo (Sonora) and Américo Villarreal (Tamaulipas) Both governors are reportedly under U.S. investigation for alleged ties to organized crime. Their U.S. visas have been revoked, and they are currently operating under special parole statuses. Villarreal has specifically faced allegations regarding fuel smuggling (huachicol). Both governors have denied these claims as false and lacking evidence. Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca (former Tamaulipas governor) In 2021, the Mexican federal congress voted to impeach him on charges of tax evasion, money laundering, and organized crime.
