Michael Madigan, the former Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, has been involved in multiple legal investigations and charges related to corruption and misconduct. In 2022, he was indicted in federal court on 23 counts, including charges of racketeering, conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and other related offenses, stemming from allegations of trading legislation for personal and political gain, particularly involving the utility company Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) (CourtListener, Chicago Tribune). In a significant development, Madigan was convicted in February 2025 on 10 counts of conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud after a four-month trial that involved extensive evidence, including taped conversations and documents. The case was considered one of the most prominent public corruption trials in Chicago’s history, and Madigan was sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison along with a $2.5 million fine (AP News, Chicago Tribune). Madigan’s legal troubles continued with an appeal in 2026, where the Seventh Circuit Court upheld his conviction, affirming that sufficient evidence supported the charges and that there were no prejudicial errors in the trial proceedings (Court of Appeals). Throughout his career, Madigan was also subject to allegations of unethical conduct, influence-peddling, and maintaining extensive patronage networks, which contributed to his reputation as a powerful political boss in Illinois. However, aside from the federal corruption charges and subsequent conviction, there are no publicly reported allegations of fraud, financial misconduct, or other criminal activities beyond these major cases (Wikipedia).
