Michael Misick served as the first Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 2006 to 2009, following his tenure as Chief Minister starting in 2003. His administration was marked by widespread corruption allegations, including the systematic misuse of Crown land for personal enrichment and political bribery. These activities triggered a 2008 Commission of Inquiry, his 2009 resignation, and the temporary suspension of the territory’s constitution by the United Kingdom. On 4 February 2026, the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands convicted Misick on three counts of bribery. On 29 May 2026, he was sentenced to four years and 26 days in prison. His co-defendants, McAllister Hanchell and Thomas Misick, were also sentenced to three and four years respectively for their roles in related bribery and money laundering schemes. Misick has maintained that all charges were politically motivated and has indicated his intent to appeal. Previously, Misick faced a failed 2008 claim regarding the alleged rape of an American woman and survived several years of litigation and extradition proceedings following his 2012 arrest in Brazil.
