Nicolas Sarkozy has been involved in several high-profile legal cases following his presidency (2007–2012). In September 2025, he was convicted of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to solicit campaign funding from Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 election. He was sentenced to five years in prison, though the court acquitted him of passive corruption, embezzlement, and illegal campaign financing. He has appealed this conviction and remains incarcerated. Previously, Sarkozy was convicted of graft and influence-peddling for attempting to bribe a magistrate for confidential information, serving time under house arrest with an electronic ankle tag. He is also involved in the Bygmalion affair, a case concerning illegal campaign financing during his 2012 presidential run, which has reached France's highest administrative court. Additionally, Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, have been placed under investigation for alleged witness tampering regarding the retraction of statements by intermediary Ziad Takieddine.
