Pedro Castillo served as President of Peru from July 28, 2021, until his removal on December 7, 2022, following an unsuccessful attempt to dissolve Congress. His presidency was marked by multiple corruption investigations and criminal proceedings. On December 7, 2022, Castillo was arrested and charged with rebellion, abuse of authority, and grave public disturbance for attempting a self-coup. Prosecutors have sought a total sentence of 34 years for these actions. Following his trial, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison on November 27, 2025. Separately, prosecutors have investigated Castillo for leading a criminal organization, aggravated influence peddling, and collusion related to fraudulent public works contracts, including the Puente Tarata II project and dealings with Petroperú and the Ministry of Housing. Prosecutors have estimated a potential 31-year sentence for these corruption-related charges. Other controversies during his term included allegations of influence peddling involving family members and associates, the discovery of $20,000 at the Government Palace, and the alleged misuse of a military aircraft to transport relatives. Castillo repeatedly denied these allegations, characterizing them as political persecution.
