Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is currently facing a pending trial on charges of influence peddling and embezzlement. In April 2024, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado launched an investigation into allegations that Gómez exploited her position to secure private professional advantages, including the management of a university chair at Madrid's Complutense University and the use of public resources for private interests. While initial charges included corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds, a Madrid provincial court dismissed those two specific accusations in July 2026, narrowing the upcoming trial to focus on influence peddling and embezzlement. The case originated from a private complaint filed by the anti-corruption organization Manos Limpias, which has ties to the political far-right. Gómez maintains her innocence, and Prime Minister Sánchez has consistently characterized the proceedings as a politically motivated harassment campaign. As part of the judicial process, Gómez has been ordered to report to the court periodically. Earlier requests to bar her from international travel and surrender her passport were recently lifted by the Madrid provincial court. A trial date has not yet been set.
