Rep. Kweon

Kweon Seong-dong, a five-term lawmaker and former floor leader of the People Power Party, was stripped of his parliamentary seat on July 16, 2026, after the Supreme Court upheld a two-year prison sentence for violating the Political Funds Act. Kweon was convicted of accepting 100 million won in illegal political funds in January 2022 from a senior Unification Church official in exchange for lobbying for the church’s policy interests under the Yoon administration. He was arrested in September 2025 and has been incarcerated since. Beyond the 2022 bribery case, Kweon faced investigations into allegations that he received additional cash payments from Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja and leaked details regarding a police probe into her alleged overseas gambling. While Kweon has faced previous corruption allegations during the Moon Jae-in administration, he was acquitted in those earlier cases. Kweon consistently denied the Unification Church allegations, characterizing the investigation as political retaliation.
