Robert Fico

Robert Fico is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Slovakia’s history, currently serving his fourth term. Throughout his career, he has faced numerous allegations of corruption, fraud, and misconduct, many linked to figures within his Smer-SD party. In 2022, Fico and former Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák were charged with establishing and masterminding a criminal group, abuse of power, and jeopardizing confidential tax information. These charges were later dismissed by the Attorney General due to insufficient evidence. Fico has historically faced allegations regarding campaign finance irregularities and inappropriate ties to business tycoons, all of which he has denied. Fico resigned as Prime Minister in 2018 following mass public protests sparked by the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, who had been researching corruption involving individuals close to Fico’s government. In March 2026, the opposition Freedom and Solidarity Party filed a criminal complaint against Fico alleging high treason, abuse of power, and potential coordination with a foreign power regarding the cessation of arms deliveries to Ukraine. His current administration has abolished the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which handled sensitive corruption and organized-crime cases, and has restructured the National Criminal Agency. These reforms have drawn scrutiny from the European Parliament and Commission over rule-of-law concerns.
