Robert Menendez is a former U.S. Senator from New Jersey (2006–2024) whose career was marked by two major federal corruption indictments. In 2015, Menendez was indicted on charges including bribery and fraud related to gifts from a donor, Dr. Salomon Melgen. That trial ended in a 2017 mistrial due to a deadlocked jury, and the Department of Justice subsequently dropped the charges in 2018. Following the mistrial, the Senate Select Committee on Ethics admonished him in 2018 for violating Senate rules regarding gift disclosure and acceptance and ordered him to repay the value of impermissible gifts. In September 2023, Menendez was indicted on federal corruption charges alleging he and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle in exchange for using his Senate influence to benefit the governments of Egypt and Qatar and to interfere in criminal prosecutions of three associates. In July 2024, a jury convicted him on all 16 criminal counts, including bribery, extortion, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Following the conviction, Menendez announced he would resign his Senate seat effective August 20, 2024. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison on January 29, 2025. He has maintained his innocence and pledged to appeal.
