Samuel D. Tweah Jr. served as Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning from 2018 to 2024. In December 2023, the United States sanctioned him for allegedly abusing his position to solicit, accept, and offer bribes.
In 2025, Tweah was indicted alongside other former officials for economic sabotage, theft, and money laundering involving approximately US$6.2 million in state funds. On May 8, 2026, he was acquitted of all charges in this case by a jury in Criminal Court C. Following his acquittal, the Assets Recovery and Property Retrieval Task Force (AREPT) summoned him in May 2026 regarding a new investigation into the alleged diversion of US$20.5 million in rice subsidy funds.
