Shi Yongxin served as the abbot of Shaolin Temple from 1999 until 2025. In May 2026, he was sentenced to 24 years in prison for embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and bribery. The court found he embezzled over 131 million yuan and misappropriated over 151 million yuan between 2003 and 2025. He was also fined 3.5 million yuan. Previously, Shi faced investigations in 2015 regarding financial and sexual misconduct; those charges were dismissed by Henan authorities in 2017 due to insufficient evidence. Other controversies included criticism of the temple's commercialization, lavish gifts, and alleged violations of monastic precepts.
