Stephen Stat Smith, a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, resigned from his seat effective January 1, 2013, following a voter fraud scandal. In December 2012, he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of deprivation of rights under color of law for his role in an absentee ballot scheme during the 2009 and 2010 elections. Federal prosecutors found that Smith cast ballots for voters who were ineligible or unaware that ballots were being submitted in their names. As part of his plea agreement, he was barred from seeking public office for five years.
