Thaksin Shinawatra, a former Prime Minister of Thailand and businessman, has faced numerous legal challenges, including corruption and abuse of power allegations.
In 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced him in absentia to two years in prison for corruption related to a 2003 government land deal involving his then-wife. Following his return to Thailand in 2023, he received an eight-year sentence for previous corruption cases, later commuted to one year by royal pardon. In 2025, the Supreme Court ruled his six-month hospital stay for that sentence was unlawful, ordering him to serve the remainder in jail.
Additionally, Thaksin faced an accusation of failing to declare all his wealth, for which he was acquitted. He was also investigated for lese-majeste, but a court acquitted him of this charge in 2025. His political career involved significant controversies, including a 2006 tax-free sale of shares in his company, Shin Corp, and criticism regarding a 2003 drug crackdown.
