Wife of Prime Minister

Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is set to stand trial before a citizen jury following a court ruling that upheld charges of influence peddling and embezzlement. The case, originating from an investigation opened in April 2024, centers on allegations that Gómez leveraged her position to secure private professional benefits, including the management of a university chair at Complutense University. While a judge initially charged her with four crimes, a Madrid provincial court subsequently dismissed the accusations of corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds. Gómez has consistently denied all wrongdoing, describing the proceedings as politically motivated. Previously imposed restrictions, such as the surrender of her passport and mandatory regular court appearances, were lifted by the court. No trial date has been set.
