Zach Wahls

Zach Wahls has faced no criminal charges, indictments, or convictions. He has been the subject of one formal ethics complaint, which was unanimously dismissed by the bipartisan Iowa Senate Ethics Committee on May 22, 2026. The complaint alleged that his past employment as executive director of The Next 50 Network LLC while serving in the state legislature violated ethics rules prohibiting employment with political organizations. Wahls successfully argued that his employment was strictly with the LLC, and he provided evidence of prior ethics guidance from the Secretary of the Senate confirming the arrangement. Additionally, Wahls faced internal controversy in June 2023 when he was removed as Iowa Senate Democratic leader by his caucus. This followed criticism from colleagues regarding his firing of two longtime caucus staff members and reports regarding his high level of travel and expense reimbursements while in leadership.
