Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, is an American entrepreneur and the founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. His career has been marred by extensive scandals involving fraud, financial misconduct, and corruption. According to multiple sources, including indictments and court documents, Bankman-Fried was charged with orchestrating a massive scheme to defraud FTX customers and investors, diverting over $1.8 billion of customer funds for personal use, investments, and political contributions (USANYS; Wikipedia). He was indicted in December 2022 on seven criminal charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering, and was subsequently convicted on all counts in November 2023 (Wikipedia; CourtListener).
The collapse of FTX in November 2022, triggered by revelations of misappropriation of customer funds and financial mismanagement, led to the company's bankruptcy and widespread fallout within the cryptocurrency industry. Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas and extradited to the United States, where he faced a federal trial. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit approximately $11 billion (Wikipedia; Wikimedia). His legal troubles also include allegations of attempting to influence regulation through illegal campaign contributions and conspiring to bribe Chinese officials to regain access to frozen trading accounts (USANYS). Overall, Bankman-Fried’s career is characterized by significant legal and ethical violations, culminating in one of the most high-profile white-collar crime cases in recent history.
